      <description>My name is Mark Thomas. I work on system-wide software contracts for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. In addition to my regular duties, I participate as a MnSCU member of the Minnesota Learning Commons. The MnLC brings together members of Minnesota State Colleges &amp; Universities, and the University of Minnesota, along with K-12 teachers, and staff from the Minnesota Department of Education. MnLC members strive to create synergy among our respective organizations.



I've recently collaborated with Wolfram Research, Sales Engineer, Kelvin Mischo on a plan to provide "Mathematica 8" to Minnesota high schools. This program will provide five "cost-free" licenses of Wolfram Research - "Mathematica," for any public high school in Minnesota interested in participating.



The arrangement with Wolfram Research is good for the remainder of this academic year. This is an experimental program for Wolfram Research, as Minnesota is the first state ever to gain this kind of access to Mathematica for high schools. If things go well it may be possible to extend this program.

      <description>Each year 3M invites local teachers to participate in the 3M TWIST program (Teachers Working in Science and Technology) offered in collaboration with the Minnesota High Technology Association Foundation. This program provides a six week industrial science experience for Grades 7-12 Science, Math, Tech Ed., and Industrial Arts teachers under the supervision of a 3M scientist. Semi-weekly lunch sessions focus on a variety of topics including intellectual property and product development, and include tours of facilities. This opportunity offers a $4000 stipend to the participating teachers as well as an

We have a Hewlett Packard DesignJet 1050C   up to 36  wide roll color plotter available and several rolls of paper that could go with it. We no longer use it in our office. It is about 10 years old. It does need a new drive belt (still available online - cost around $200 plus about 4 hours to install). Refurbished models available online for about $2000, we would be interested in donating it to the right fit. </description>

      <description>Digital Photography Bridge to Nature Program provides workshops to Minnesota teachers, of grades 3 -9, about using digital nature photography in the classroom.



The FREE four hour workshops include camera-use instruction, tips on getting great nature photos, outdoor practice time, web 2.0 integration techniques, and curriculum connections with sample activities.

After attending the workshops teachers will earn 4 CEUs and have access to checking out a free camera kit for their classroom.



Digital Bridge is generously funded by the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesotas Resources, Watchable Wildlife, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program



Please contact me (ami@amithompson.com) if you would like to set up a workshop at your Minneapolis/St. Paul area school (a minimum of 10 teachers is requested). This workshop, for teachers of grades 8-12, uses lasers and real-life case studies to make the study of physics, chemistry, geology, art, and biology more meaningful, relevant, and fun.



The workshop includes an intro to lasers and optics, laser safety tips, hands-on laser experiments, real-life case study details, and experiments with handouts to use in the classroom. All materials are correlated with current standards; these activities will meld with your curriculum, not add to it.



After attending a workshop, teachers will earn four CEUs, get a written description of the technological training provided to submit to their district, and be able to check out a laser classroom kit for two weeks.



Cost: $65/teacher (kit checkout $25/ two weeks).

      <title>Laser and Optics Teacher Workshop</title>

This four-hour workshop for teachers of grades 5   12 examines dragonflies and damselflies in a new way; exposing their education connections to science, art, and social studies.



The workshops will include:

  An intro to dragonfly and damselfly life histories and anatomy

  Techniques for dragon and damselfly ID

  Outdoor hands-on field time capturing and examining as many Odonata (order name for dragonflies and damselflies) as we can catch

  Citizen science connections

  Classroom activities with handouts.

All materials are correlated with current standards; these activities will meld with your curriculum, not add to it.
